Bo Diddley was born Ellas Bates on Sunday December 30, 1928, on a small farm near the town of McComb, Mississippi, in rural Pike County, close to the Louisiana border, the only child of Ethel Wilson and Eugene Bates, he had three half-brothers and a half-sister. He was adopted by his mothers cousin, Mrs. Gussie McDaniel, along with his cousins Willis, Lucille and Freddie, and adopted the name Ellas McDaniel. In the mid-130s the family moved to the south side of Chicago. Soon after, he began to take violin lessons from Professor O. W. Frederick at the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. He studied the violin for 12 years, composing two concertos for the instrument. For Christmas in 1940, his sister Lucille bought him his first guitar, a cheap Harmony acoustic. It was at this time that he acquired the nickname Bo Diddley (. Bo Diddley is me to tell ya the truth, I dont know what it the name really is. ) from his fellow pupils at the Foster Vocational High School in Chicago. The newly named Bo Diddley had long been fascinated by the rhythms that he heard coming from the sanctified churches. A frustrated drummer, he tried to translate the sounds that he heard into his own style. Gradually he began to duplicate what he did with his violin bow by rapidly flicking his pick across his guitar strings: I play the guitar as if Im playing the drums. I play drum licks on the guitar. He continued to practice the guitar through his early teens. Shortly before leaving school he formed his first group, a trio named The Hipsters, later known as The Langley Avenue Jive Cats, after the Chicago street where he lived. Upon graduation he pursued a variety of low-paid occupations including truck driving, building site work and boxing, playing locally with his group to supplement his income. Around this time he married his first wife, Louise Woolingham, but the marriage did not survive. A year later he married Ethel Tootsie Smith, a marriage that lasted just over a decade. In 1950 maracas player Jerome Green joined the group, followed a year later by harmonica player Billy Boy Arnold. After more than a decade of playing on street corners and in clubs around Chicago, Bo Diddley finally got the chance to cut a demo of 2 songs that he had written Uncle John and Im A Man. After various rejections from local record labels (most notably VeeJay), in the spring of 1955 he took the recordings to brothers Leonard and Phil Chess, owners of Chess Records, with studios located at 4750-2 South Cottage Grove Ave. in Chicago. They suggested that he changed the title and the lyrics of Uncle John to more reflect his own unique personality. The twp songs were re-recorded at Bill Putnams Universal Recording Studio at 111 E. Ontario in Chicago on Wednesday, March 2, 1955, and released as a double A-side disc Bo Diddley/Im A Man on the Chess Records subsidiary label Checker Records. It went straight to the top of the RB charts, establishing him as one of the most exciting and original new talents in American music. With musical influences of his own ranging from Louis Jordan to John Lee Hooker. and from Nat King Cole to Muddy Waters. Bo Diddley was now set to help shape and define the sound and presentation of rock music for all time. From Elvis Presley to George Thorogood. from The Rolling Stones to ZZ Top. from The Doors to The Clash. from Buddy Holly to Prince. and from The Everly Brothers to Run DMC, all acknowledged the unique influences of Bo Diddley upon their styles of music. Now in his early 70s, he is still very much active in the recording studio and in the clubs and the concert halls around the world. He performed a rousing version of his classic song Who Do You Love with George Thorogood The Destroyers in front of a TV audience of millions at the Live Aid Concert in Philadelphia in 1985. A couple of years later he was deservedly an early inductee into the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. In 1996 he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Rhythm n Blues Foundation and in 1998 received another Lifetime Achievement Award, this time from The Recording Academy at that years annual Grammy Awards Ceremony. In 2000 yet another honor was justifiably awarded to him when he was inducted into The Mississippi Musicians Hall of Fame. In the words of one of his many famous eponymous songs, Bo Diddley Put The Rock in Rock n Roll, and remember. Bo Knows Cynthia is the newest co-host of InnerSPACE, joining the panel in September, 2011. A two-time Gemini Award nominee, Loysts previous role was as host and producer of Sex Matters. Prior to that, she spent many years as the Supervising Producer for the internationally syndicated and award-winning documentary series SexTV where she was able to boldly go where not too many people have gone before. Loyst had the opportunity to interview a wide range of people, including academics, fetishists and celebrities while supervising a variety of otherworldly productions for SexTV, including Monstrous Desires: Sexuality Horror, Loving The Alien: Sex Science Fiction, Remote Control: Romancing The Robot and Japanese Anime. Loysts appreciation for genre entertainment began at an early age, when at just six years old, she would routinely dress up as all of the male characters in Star Wars or Battle of the Planets. Although she still has a deep affection for cosplay, Loysts first love is. bem. love. While studying in York Universitys Film program, she began writing a popular sex column titled Pandoras Box for the independent magazine Rosco. Cynthia graduated from York Universitys Film and Video Department with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. She also studied with Yorks Women/Gender Studies Department. When not re-playing Fable she can be found pillaging the horror section of movie stores or re-reading Clive Barkers Weaveworld. She has seen Predator too many times to count and has a huge affection for the 80s film classic Flash Gordon. And, of course, Barbarella. Over the past several years, Loyst has appeared many times on radio and television, including ETALK, CP24, THE MARILYN DENIS SHOW, CTV NEWSNET, Virgin Radio 99.9 FM, 103.9 Proud FM, 104.5 CHUM FM and TVO, reporting on dating, mating and relating. Her public appearances have included speaking engagements at colleges and universities throughout the GTA, such as Ryerson University, Sheridan College, Centennial College and University of Toronto - where she often guest lectures on media, technology and sexuality. Loysts perfect dinner party guest list would include Bruce Campbell, Ursula K. Le Guin, David Cronenberg, Jensen Ackles and Carrie Fisher. Alec Gillis began his professional career in 1980 at Roger Cormans New World Pictures. While working with future luminaries such as James Cameron and Gale Ann Hurd, Alec also attended UCLA Film School. By 1985 he began working for Creature FX legend Stan Winston (Aliens, Predator, Pumpkinhead). There he met Tom Woodruff, Jr with whom he co-founded the Creature FX studio Amalgamated Dynamics, Inc. (ADI) in 1988. The duo received an Oscar for their work on Death Becomes Her, as well as nominations for Alien 3 and Starship Troopers. They also won BAFTAs and Saturn Awards for the films Starship Troopers and Jumanji. Gillis is also a writer. His book Worlds: A Mission of Discovery has been optioned by a major studio. Hes also written a number of screenplays and created a TV series. Frances major sex siren of the early 50s, this lesser-remembered post-war French pastry pre-dated bombshell Brigitte Bardot by a few years but her brief reign did not compare and has not lived up to the Bardot era. The cult mystique is not there even after dying mysteriously and relatively young. Martine was born Marie-Louise Mourer on May 16, 1920 (some references indicate 1922), but little is known of her childhood. A chance meeting with comedian Andre Luguet steered her toward a career in the theatre. Trained by Rene Simon, she made her 1940 stage debut with Phedre billed as Maryse Arley. She subsequently caught the eye of Henri-Georges Clouzot who hired her for his film The Cat, based on the novel by Colette, but the project was scrapped. Nevertheless, she did attract attention in the movie Wolf Farm (1943), which takes advantage of her photogenic beauty and ease in front of the camera despite a limited acting ability. A pin-up goddess and support actress throughout the 40s, Martine also appeared on the stage of the Theater of the Renaissance. A torrid affair with actor Georges Marchal, who was married to actress Dany Robin at the time, ended disastrously and she attempted suicide by taking an alcohol/drug overdose and throwing herself into the Seine River. She was saved by a taxi driver who accompanied her there. Ironically, the unhappy details surrounding her suicide attempt renewed the fascination audiences had with Martine up until that time. In 1950 she scored her first huge film success with the French Revolution epic Caroline Cherie (no doubt prompted by her semi-nude scenes and taunting, kittenish sexuality) and she was off and running at the box office. Her film romps were typically done tastefully with an erotic twinge of innocence and gentle sexuality plus an occasional bubble bath thrown in as male bait. She continued spectacularly with an array of costumed teasers such as Adorable Creatures (1952), Sins of the Borgias (1953), Madame du Barry (1954) and Nana (1954), all guided and directed by second husband Christian-Jacque, whom she married in 1954. A true feast for the eyes and one of the most beautiful actresses of her time, Martine later divorced the director due to professional conflicts and long separations. One last memorable part would come to her as the title role in Max Ophls s Lola MontxE8s portraying a circus performer who entrances all around her. By the mid 50s, Bardot had replaced Martine on the goddess pedestal and the voluptuous blondes career went into a severe decline. Although such mature roles as Empress Josephine in Austerlitz and others followed, nothing revived audience interest. Depressed, Martine turned alarmingly reclusive while a third marriage to French doctor Andre Rouveix also soured by 1962. Problems with substance abuse and a severe accident in the 60s also curtailed her career dramatically. Her last film Hell Is Empty was made in 1963 but not released until 1967. One last marriage to fourth husband Mike Eland, an English businessman and friend of first hubby Steve Crane, seemed hopeful, but on February 6, 1967, Martine died of cardiac arrest at age 46 in the bathroom of a hotel in Monacco Her husband discovered her. Newspapers hinted at a possible drug overdose but nothing was ever proven. She was buried in the cemetery of Cannes. Hiroshi Katagiri was born in Japan. Enamored by the artistry of film at a young age, he moved to the US at age 18 to pursue a career in special makeup effects. He became a primary artist at Stan Winston Studios, where he was a go-to effects guy for 3 films directed by Steven Spielberg - Jurassic Park, A. I. and War of the Worlds. Over time, he mastered the art of sculpture at the highest level, which led to him being a sought-after character (creature) designer - not only by Spielberg, but Rob Marshal, Guillermo Del Toro, Sam Raimi, and others. Though still young, Hiroshi has already amassed 39 film credits in special effects, 11 in makeup effects, still others as a puppeteer and lab tech, and has worked on such titles as Wolverine, Pirates of the Caribbean, Alien v Predator Requiem, Cabin in the Woods, and The Hunger Games. His TV credits include being part of an Emmy winning team for The X-Files. He is a true fan of the horror genre, has written and directed several acclaimed horror shorts, and now pursues his ultimate dream - to produce and direct a full length feature film that will scare the pants off its audience. Hiroshi is dedicated to his craft, loves to work, and also loves to teach. His sculpture seminars are widely attended by budding effects artists in both the US and Japan. He is a longtime student of Aikido - a Japanese martial art that teaches one to unify their life energy. Jesse Merlin plays Elric in Beyond the Gates, which won the Nightfall Jury Prize at the LA Film Festival (June 2016), with following screenings at Sitges Film Festival (Spain), Fantasy Filmfest (Germany), Bruce Campbells Horror Film Festival (Chicago), Knoxville Horror Film Fest, and Popcorn Frights (Miami). He attends its European premiere at Fright Fest in London (August 2016). He voices F. A.N. G in the video game Street Fighter V, and in Ross Patterson films plays 2LT Chandler in Range 15, William Keller in Helen Keller vs Nightwolves, and Werewolf Hitler in FDR: American Badass He plays the Catfish in the Dream Corp LLC episode The Predator on Cartoon Networks Adult Swim (Fall 2016), and voiced Makube in the anime Hellsing Ultimate X. Other appearances include as Dr. Jesse Merlin in Jackass 3D/3.5, alongside several upcoming genre features. Hes sung Dr. Hill in Stuart Gordons award-winning Re-Animator: The Musical 200 times in Las Vegas, Edinburgh, New York and Los Angeles as well as on the forthcoming original cast soundtrack. The role earned him an Ovation Award nomination (2011) and a rave review in the New York Times (2012). Merlin created the role of The President of the USA in the long-running popular operetta The Beastly Bombing, performing at the Steve Allen Theater, New York Musical Theatre Festival, and Opera aan het Ij (Amsterdam), in addition to musical roles like Hannibal Lecter in Silence The Musical (2012) and the Old Priest in Exorcistic (2013). His comedy work includes Matty Simmons Sketches From The National Lampoon (2013). As principal bass and patter-baritone with touring repertory Opera A La Carte for 7 seasons, he sang a variety of roles in The Mikado, The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, and The Gondoliers. Merlin was profiled by NPR on Weekend Edition in a nationally aired, award-winning story about his niche career as Mr. Horror Musicals (2013). He played the Troll King in a concert version of Peer Gynt with the San Francisco Symphony with Maestro Michael Tilson Thomas (2013). He sings Professor Upham on the Dreams in the Witch House heavy metal Lovecraft double album (2012). As a younger performer, he had a regional opera career career spanning 11 years and 45 roles such as Mephistopheles in Faust, Leporello in Don Giovanni and the title role in Don Pasquale. Discovered in the chorus by retired Metropolitan Opera star and General Director Irene Dalis, Merlin was a Principal Artist-in-Residence with Opera San Jose (2002-2006), singing 17 principal roles. He made his international debut in the electronic opera Le Terrain Vague at the Thtre du Rond Point Thtre Lucernaire (2005). Born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, she started performing in high diving show at the age of 18. She became a professional high diver and was the first woman to win the Acapulco Cliff Diving Championship, held in Mexico, at age 24. After moving to California, she started doing stunts for film TV in 2002. Since then, shes worked on over 100 projects. In 2011, she won her first Taurus World Stunt Award for High Work for her performance in Predators. In 2010, she won a SAG award for her work doubling Anna Paquin on True Blood. She has also been nominated for 3 other SAG awards for best stunt ensemble. Joseph Rye is a British actor who has appeared in numerous Film, TV, Theatre productions. Film credits include Batman Begins, Alien Versus Predator, V For Vendetta, Mean Machine, Life Is Hot in Cracktown. Notable TV appearances include CSI New York, High Incident, Nash Bridges, Midsomer Murders, Judge John Deed, Casualty, Field Punishment No.1, Holby City, EastEnders, Fame LA, Conan The Adventurer, The Bill. Theatre roles include Biff Loman in Death Of A Salesman, Macduff in Macbeth, Stanley Webber in the Birthday Party, Jimmy Floyd in The Pitmen Painters, Wilson in The Ruffian On The Stair, Julian Cristoforou in The Public Eye, Dennis in Loot. Now its hard to remember it any other way. Band of Horses singer Ben Bridwells compellingly evasive lyrical style will never let the listener on to the exact intent of this line as it appears in Neighbor, the expansive Infinite Arms album closer, but taken out of the context of the song it becomes a sentiment of currency. The present state of the band is as close to ideal as rock n roll can be. Having assembled a true creative and personal collective, designed and signed the record deal of his dreams, and made a fantastic new album free of any influence other than his onstage brothers in arms, its hard to imagine that Bridwell cares to dwell on any time but the present. It took nearly 2 years, virtual bankruptcy, five states and a dead falcon to get there, but Infinite Arms is the product of a band doing things on their own terms and finally learning to enjoy the results. The songs on Infinite Arms project the essence of the different locales across America that became the setting for the recording and songwriting process behind the album. The serene woods of Northern Minnesota and the bands native Carolinas inspired the songwriting, lending the compositions an air of comfort and familiarity. While those locations helped the songs come to life, the sounds were influenced by the recording settings. The rich musical heritage of Muscle Shoals, AL, the sublime beauty of Ashevilles Blue Ridge Mountains, the glamorous Hollywood Hills and the vast Mojave desert helped yield the groups most focused and dynamic recordings to date. Infinite Arms was a group effort in the truest sense of the phrase. Trading song ideas remotely and then joining in the studio to work through arrangements led to writing credits for all five band members throughout the record, making the album a reflection of the taste and style of each Horse. Bridwell is the lone constant member since Everything All the Time, the bands 2006 debut, but if you ask him he might tell you that Infinite Arms is just that: a debut in the sense that he entered the studio for the first time with a group of musicians working together as a cohesive force. All members made invaluable contributions to the inimitable sound that Bridwell has crafted since the bands inception. Band of Horses is Bridwell, Creighton Barrett, Ryan Monroe, Tyler Ramsey and Bill Reynolds. The quintet have long standing ties: Monroe and Bridwell played baseball together in grade school, Ramsey and Reynolds cut their teeth in the same Asheville, NC music scene, and Barrett met Bridwell at a party as teenagers, where they bonded instantly over a mutual obsession with Dinosaur Jr. Over the course of a few years, they gradually synched up. Barrett appeared behind the kit on Cease to Begin, while Monroe joined the band on keys toward the end of the writing process of that record. Reynolds came into the fold almost by accident as he happened upon a recording session with the band at his friends Echo Mountain Studios and joined the touring lineup soon after. Ramsey, already an established solo artist, joined after Reynolds introduced him to the band in 2007, starting to tour just prior to the release of Cease to Begin and opening the shows with a set of his own material. The novelty of and high hopes for these new members demanded a completely uninhibited recording process. Anything less would have been disservice, and recognizing the most important element used to exert influence, Bridwell decided the only way to insure creative control was to finance the record himself. The result was liberating, the only dictator the creative muse. The band obeyed its every order. Strings and horns were brought in, guitar players played percussion, vocals were run through the same reverb tanks that treated the Beach Boys Good Vibrations and a backyard amphibian chorus sang the title tracks outro. Studios, engineers, pizza and whiskey are not cheap however, and near bankruptcy from recording costs prolonged the albums completion as the band had to spend time on the road to afford the next session. The resulting shows were among the best in the bands history. A sold out Carnegie Hall, epic festival sets, the now customary New Years Eve shows in Atlanta, and performances with musical idols Neil Young, Willie Nelson and Roger McGuinn kept things fresh and vibrant. The touring also helped combat studio malaise, and allowed the band to enter each recording session recharged and armed with new ideas. The thrill of honing the new material in a live setting gave the songs an edge that is difficult to capture when sedentary. While the band initially enlisted their long time producer Phil Ek to take the helm, scheduling conflicts led to a band decision to produce the majority of the record on their own. This unexpected occurrence added another dimension to the credence of freedom that seeped into every aspect of Infinite Arms. The freedom was not limited to the music. The band was looking at landscape of the business with a fresh perspective as their contract with Sub Pop had expired. Armed with their finest work to date, the band began entertaining suitors in the search for the one who would understand Bridwells vision for a new record deal. Perhaps ironically, part of this deal involved Bridwell returning in a certain fashion to his first role in the business - a label president. Predating any foray into musicianship, and completely oblivious to his talent at the time, Bridwell started Brown Records while living in Seattle. Brown Records came about thanks to two major factors. I had talented friends and I hated my job. he says. Those talented friends were a band called Carissas Wierd. I always considered myself their biggest fan and supporter so around this time I decided it was up to me to see that these recordings were available to any local set of ears willing to listen. I had moved up from my dishwashing position to line cook now and was making good tips, but held tons of resentment for a lot of the management, promoters, and even some bands that I was feeding every night that I felt treated me like a second class citizen, only there to cook for them and deal with their sometimes devilish moods. I retaliated by saving every tip I got at the end of the night and stuffing it into a dead space in a stereo speaker. Id have to crack the thing open like a piggy bank one day and ruin my listening environment to get it out, but for good reason. There was little doubt in my mind that the plan would work. I just didnt figure how well it would work. I finally cracked my speaker open one day to reveal what I would think was probably around five or six hundred dollars. This was hardly enough to press a batch of 1,000 cds at the time, so I weaseled a loan out of my father for the rest of the cash. With a wonderful crackpot team of art director Jeff Montano and mastering engineer Joe Crawford (RIP) we got all the specifics together and pulled off the remarkable feat that was BROWN 001 Carissas Wierd Ugly But Honest: 1996-1999 A label boss was born. Bridwell continued to release records by Carissas Wierd and other local acts including S and Aveo, and eventually joined Carissas Wierd as the bands drummer, leading the way to the discovery of his musical talent, a fortunate occurrence for his fans. Brown eventually became a distant priority behind Bridwells new day job as a professional musician, but his passion for discovering and nurturing talent never left. When it came time to haggle with label suitors, he insisted on resurrecting Brown as an imprint to release the Band of Horses record through in conjunction with Fat Possum and Columbia, and to ultimately discover, nurture and release new talent. with his friends at Fat Possum handling marketing and distribution. Infinite Arms continues the collaboration between the band and their aesthetic director Christopher Wilson. Bridwell and Wilson have a long standing friendship that dates back to their meeting in Tucson, AZ and subsequent days of washing dishes together at famed Seattle club The Crocodile. They added a professional element to their relationship when Wilson began designing Band of Horses album artwork beginning with the first record, and going on the road with the band as their photographer, while also running the projections that appear on the backdrop behind the band at each gig. An extremely talented photographer of natural landscapes, Wilsons view of the world has added the perfect visual accompaniment to the bands sound. Wilsons photographs and drawings will grace all versions of Infinite Arms, including the stunning deluxe edition which consists of the 180 gram vinyl, LP, CD, DVD featuring HD videos for every song created by Wilson and synched to a 5.1 surround sound mix by Elliot Scheiner, all packaged together in a 100 plus page coffee table book featuring Wilsons nature photographs. The title of the record is another Bridwellian play on words. Hell never let on to what it means, the only hint that its a phrase possibly misheard by thousands of people every day. Dwell on that one if you want to drive yourself nuts. Or, subscribe to Bridwells philosophy of celebrating the present and embracing the future, both of which will find Band of Horses trotting the globe as they share the fruits of their labor with the world. Although all too frequently neglected by fans of silent comedy, Max Linder is in many ways as important a figure as Charles Chaplin. Buster Keaton or Harold Lloyd. not least because he predated (and influenced) them all by several years and was largely responsible for the creation of the classic style of silent slapstick comedy. Linder started out as an actor in the French theatre, but after making his screen debut in 1905 he quickly became an enormously famous and successful film comedian on both sides of the Atlantic, thanks to his character Max, a top-hatted dandy. By 1912 he was the highest-paid film star in the world, with an unprecedented salary of one million francs. He began to direct films in 1911 and showed equal facility behind the camera, but his career suffered an almost terminal blow when he was drafted into the French army to fight in World War I. He was gassed, and the illness that resulted would blight his career. Although offered a contract in America, recurring ill health meant that his US films had little of the sparkle of his early French work, and a brief attempt to revive his career by making films for the recently-formed United Artists (one of whose founders, of course, was Chaplin) in the early 1920s came to little, although these later films are now regarded as classics. He returned to France and killed himself in a suicide pact with his wife in 1925. Lawrence Gordon (Producer) has been one of the entertainment industrys most prolific and successful producers in a career spanning four decades. He has been behind such timeless films as the drama Field of Dreams, for which Gordon received a Best Picture Oscar nomination the landmark action film Die Hard and the ultimate buddy picture 48 Hrs., starring Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy. Gordon more recently produced Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the sequel to the earlier hit Hellboy, reuniting the original cast under the direction of Guillermo del Toro. Born in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Gordon graduated from Tulane University with a degree in business administration. Moving to Los Angeles in the early 1960s, he went to work as executive assistant to Aaron Spelling at Four Star Television and soon became a writer and associate producer of many Spelling shows. He followed with a stint as head of West Coast talent development for ABC Television and later as an executive with Bob Banner Associates. In 1968, he joined Sam Arkoff and Jim Nicholson at American International Pictures (AIP) as story editor, and rose to vice president in charge of development. He then segued to vice president at Screen Gems, the television division of Columbia Pictures, where he helped put together the classic television movie Brians Song, as well as the first novel for television, the adaptation of Leon Uris QB VII. Accepting an offer to become the first executive in the companys history to head worldwide production, Gordon returned to AIP. His many projects included Coffy, Foxy Brown, Hells Angels 69, Wild in the Streets, John Milius Dillinger (which Gordon also executive-produced), and Ralph Bakshis groundbreaking and controversial animated hit Heavy Traffic, which was named one of The New York Times top-10 films of 1973. Gordon then formed Lawrence Gordon Productions and began a long and successful association with director Walter Hill. Among the duos memorable titles are Hard Times, starring Charles Bronson The Driver, with Ryan ONeal and Isabelle Adjani the cult classic The Warriors 48 Hrs., teaming Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy, in his feature film debut the rock-and-roll fable Streets of Fire Brewsters Millions, with Richard Pryor and John Candy and Another 48 Hrs., which reunited the stars from the original. Gordon also produced the comedy hit The End, starring Burt Reynolds, and collaborated with him again on the box office smash Hooper. Born in January 1977 Andrew Gernhard grew up with a fascination for the British hit science fiction series Doctor Who. The series birthed an interest in creative filmmaking at an early age, and using home video camcorders, he would shoot short films which he wrote, directed, produced, edited and, often, acted in as well. During his college years as a communications student at Southern Connecticut State University, Andrew first met Michael Pleckaitis, a filmmaker who would soon become his partner to form Pioneer Motion Pictures. Together they embarked upon the task of producing a feature length film entitled Trees, a spoof of the Steven Spielberg blockbuster Jaws. In 2015 an exhibit mounted by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences along with The Victoria Albert Museum, London and curated by Deborah Nadoolman Landis an Academy Award nominee for costume design launched the exhibit held in the soon to be Academy Museum for a limited time. The Hollywood Costume exhibit celebrated and examined costume design as an essential tool of cinematic storytelling. The Pretty Woman Red Gown and the very distressed Die Hard Undershirt and Pants were displayed in this unique setting along with 100 other iconic costumes from the 1900s to present day. At this time the Die Hard costume is in the permanent collection at the Smithsonian. For Vance, total involvement and a collaborative spirit are key. As a costume designer she found she had influence over the look and feel of a film, producing was a natural segue. Not one to limit her creative reach, she channeled her energies into producing as well as costume designing the studio films Time Cop, Judgment Night and The Getaway. The Independent films that Vance shepherded from script to screen and produced are Embrace of the Vampire, The Legend of Gator Face and Digging to China. Vance developed the concept, designed and was an executive producer on the television series Pacific Blue. She also designed and produced the television series Unknown Sender. For theater she designed the play In Heat and painted the scenic backdrop for the play along with another designer/painter. The play was reviewed in the LA Times as being OZ like. In 2016 Vance costumed designed Betraying the Lion a play (filmed) set in the16th century Venice Ghetto with 25 actors having significant parts. The play was staged at The Museum of Tolerance. Born to an Air-Force family in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Crash spent his early childhood in the vagabond style of military life. Most of his early training began from observing nature, where he gained a deep appreciation for the natural order of things. He seemed to have developed an understanding of light and shade and how objects related to one another. Along with his observations of present nature, he was also intrigued with visions of what once was, namely prehistoric wildlife. He delved into the study of Paleontology and soon found the marriage between factual science and the powers of the imagination to be the perfect testing ground for creating what was once only a world of fantasy. Crash made the proclamation that, when he grew up, he was going to do dinosaurs. Crash received a scholarship to the Art Center College of Design, in Pasadena, graduating with a BFA in illustration in 1988. That same year he met Stan Winston - consequently establishing a working relationship that would last for 12 years. Crashs first design challenge was Predator II, directed by Stephen Hopkins. He soon found himself immersed in the work that he could before only admire as a fan. Soon after, he collaborated with Tim Burton for Edward Scissorhands. Burton was indeed a hero of Crashs, and as such, Crash reveled in the collaboration. Incorporating the facial features of actor Johnny Depp, Crash translated Burtons concepts into three different illustrations, one of which was selected as the final look for the character. Immediately following was James Camerons epic science fiction sequel Terminator 2. With Camerons background in art direction, Crash was challenged to satisfy the eye of a brilliant artist as well as director. Cameron had Crash designing for what came to be a 205 million box office sensation. Working once again with Tim Burton, Crash was asked to design the Penguin makeup Danny DeVito would wear in Batman Returns. The result was an unforgettable character that redefined the villainous role portrayed in the comic books and distanced itself, through originality, from the television series of the 60s and 70s. Outselling the highest expectations with an overall box office success of 163 million. This design also attained a makeup Academy nomination for best make-up in a film. The following year, Jurassic Park finally gave Crash the opportunity to work with whom he considers to be one of the greatest minds in filmmaking, Steven Spielberg, while also fulfilling his childhood prophecy - he was about to do dinosaurs - and do them in an entirely unprecedented fashion. A whole new vision of dinosaurs, a whole new take on a kind of movie that had been done a million times before - essentially, breaking the mold. With new science and new ideas about what dinosaurs really were, the film depicted dinosaurs that were very active, warm-blooded and even intelligent. Because the project was cloaked in secrecy in its early stages, Crash worked in solitude on his concepts and rendered dinosaurs for an entire year. Once the film went into actual production, Crash served as an on-set puppeteer, breathing life into the prehistoric characters through radio-and cable-controlled performances, as well as performing as the Raptor he designed, donning the full size Raptor suit himself. On the heels of the phenomenal box-office success of Jurassic Parks 357 million, Crash went back to the drawing board to design make-ups for Interview With the Vampire. The responsibility on this project was to satisfy the fans of the book without necessarily creating the ultimate vampire. Casting indecisions delayed the process and warranted multiple designs for the lead character, Lestat. Once Tom Cruise was finally cast, Crash helped to design a makeup that was both subtle and as faithful as possible to author Anne Rices descriptions. From the subtlety of the vampire make-ups, Crash moved to the comic book fantasy realm with Tank Girl, a film populated with characters that were half-human, half-kangaroo. Mutations of man and beast were also the basis for the 1996 remake of The Island of Dr. Moreau, which featured a variety of his characters. The Relic, directed by Peter Hyams, challenged Crash to design a beast composed of features derived from several different animal types. He opted to stress the physical prowess of the multi-phylum beast ultimately illustrating another original character, which found its way into cult status. In the summer of 1995 he was once again given the opportunity to focus his talents on the prehistoric era. Jurassic Park: The Lost World allowed Crash to further populate his cast of dinosaur creations for Steven Spielbergs epic series. In fact, Crash helped to redefine dinosaurs. Jurassic Parks two films have grossed more than 1.6 Billion worldwide. The theme park ride is one of the most successful attractions in Universal Studios, Florida and Hollywood. The home videos flew off the shelves to the tune of 454 million. Merchandise sales including toys, clothing, video games, and books reached an approximate 1.5 billion. For the 1998 high-concept Dreamworks project Small Soldiers, Crash designed and art directed a team of illustrators creating the Commando Elite and Gorgonites, toy action figures implanted with high-tech military computer chips that allow them to take on a life of their own. This was a film that was meant to drive toy sales. In fact it did just that. Hasbro was brought in to facilitate manufacturing and distribution of the line, as it took on a life of its own, out grossing the box office revenues by twice the amount. The toy concepts alone reached 150 million in sales. After a decade of designing some of the greatest iconic film characters in movie making history, Crashs notoriety began to escalate, driving him into a category he could only dream of as a young boy, being referred to as one of the top five in his profession. Crash went on to create a multitude of characters for the major studios biggest releases, working non-stop for a two year period with films such as Disneys Inspector Gadget, Dreamworks Galaxy Quest, Universals End of Days, where he was reunited with director Peter Hyams, and Dreamworks What Lies Beneath the Hitchcockian murder mystery directed by Robert Zemeckis. After having mastered the ability to create artwork that captured the essence of storytelling, it was natural that Crash would develop a desire to tell stories in a literal sense, and thus began studying the art of writing in 1998 while continuing to build his repertoire of character designs. The opportunity presented itself in 1999 with the HBO. Creature Features series whereby Crash sold the first two stories he humbly pitched and then wrote. The first, Earth vs. The Spider went into production in early 2001, set to air at the end of the year, and is due to be distributed internationally through Columbia Tri-Star. Just as the door had opened and the foray into writing began for Crash, the work that had attached him the Horror, Sci-fi, and Fantasy genre knocked once again with a third installment of Jurassic Park, helmed by Joe Johnston, a director Crash holds in high esteem. He jumped back to his drawing board and began designing. Steve Spielbergs A. I. Artificial Intelligence was Crashs next endeavor. Not since Jurassic Park had Crashs designs, been so closely guarded. It too received an academy award nomination for best visual effects in a film. Through his new company Calypso Productions Inc. Crash has continued to create. His latest include the characters for Sound of Thunder, which once again teamed his with Peter Hyams, Larry Kasdans Dreamcatcher, Ang Lees Hulk, Disneys Pirates of the Caribbean, Hensons Time Dogs, Anschultz Entertainments Lion Witch and The Wardrobe, and Steven Sommers Van Helsing, Gale Anne Hurds/Emmet Furla Films Abominable Snowman, Steven Kings/Sonys Kingdom Hospital, and Universals Submariner. Crash is a member of the Screen Actors Guild. Hal Rayle is an Emmy Nominated voice actor living in Burbank, California and part of the Hollywood Voice Over Community. Best known for his roles in G. I. Joe, The Transformers, TeenAge Mutant Ninja Turtles, Back To The Future, the Pink Panther and recreating the voice of the Predator in Predator2. Rayle is married to actress Maggie Roswell and they have 1 daughter. After having recently played the lead role as Sied in the internet fan film Predator: Dark Ages to great reviews, Amed is rising to become a unique British Middle-Eastern actor. With over fifteen years of martial arts training it became evident that the film industry is lacking in his typecast and unique skill set. Working in independent films gave him the opportunity to work with top action stars Scott Adkins (Green Street 3: Never Back Down), Jean-Claude Van Damme (U. F.O.) and mentored by Joey Ansah (Bourne Ultimatum, Street Fighter: Assassins Fist) in fight action choreography. For Amed this wasnt enough though, he wanted to be taken more seriously as a dramatic actor rather than limiting himself to the action genre and has since trained in RADA and in various other techniques to strengthen his foundations. He has more recently appeared in Street Fighter: Resurrection TV mini series and award winning short film Chameleon along side renowned actor Togo Igawa. Glen Chin was born on January 27, 1948 in San Francisco, California, USA. He is known for his work on 50 First Dates (2004), Natural Born Killers (1994) and The Art of War (2000). Glen was a wonderfully accomplished Bass Violin virtuoso while living in Stockton, California. He was gifted in that profession with the Stockton Symphony and very well respected in his craft. He attended Grover Cleveland Grammar School, Stockton Junior High School, and Amos Alonso Stagg High School predating his entry into the movie industry. Elizabeth Green (aka Betty Green) was an American sideshow performer who was presented to audiences as The Human Stork during the early 1900s. Elizabeth was actually the first Koo Koo the Bird Girl (predating Minnie Woolsey), and toured with Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus in the 1920s and 30s. Her background is very obscure, but its generally accepted that a genetic condition was responsible for her unusual features, and she was described in a newspaper article as a cross between a crane and a shaved dachshund. She also may have suffered from mild retardation, although she had no other known medical problem. Anton La Vey, who had worked in the circus with several oddities and later founded the Church of Satan, claimed that Betty Green was not a freak at all and had entered the profitable profession of circus life by exaggerating her worst features, deliberately sucking in her cheeks and bulging her eyes out. Some claim that Green, being one of the less weird-looking attractions, was used at the entrance of the oddities sideshow in order to catch the attention of passerbys. Evidently, she had a sense of humor about her condition, because her comedy act involved dancing like a bird in a feathered bodysuit, large bird feet and a gigantic feather in her cap. She was a first-rate comedienne, but she also had a rare aptitude for business she owned five large apartment houses in the Boston area, and managed them herself when she wasnt touring with the circus. Her agent said of her, She may be koo koo enough to be able to make people laugh, but shes not koo koo when it comes to signing contracts. Betty was an avid movie fan, and had autographs of almost every well-known star in the picture business, securing them when Hollywood stars would come to see her sideshow act. Her only film credit is Tod Brownings Freaks (1932), and its claimed that Green only signed the contract to appear in Freaks so that she could might be able to get the autograph of her favorite actor, Ronald Coleman (and she was especially eager to leave immediately for Hollywood because she heard of Colemans impending divorce). She appears in several different scenes in the film, including a conversation with the Armless Girl Frances OConnor while seated at a table eating dinner. At the time she obtained the role in Freaks, Minnie Woolsey had already received billing as Koo Koo the Bird Girl. What Betty thought about this situation is unknown, but after the film was completed, she returned to the sideshow and continued her role as Koo Koo. Its unfortunate that Minnie, because she was featured in the table dance scene rather than Elizabeth, should be commonly associated with the Bird Girl. No information is known about the date or cause of Elizabeth Greens death. Over the last twenty years, Scott Christian Savas work has brought some of the worlds most beloved characters to life in film, television, comics, and games. From Casper the Friendly Ghost to the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers to Star Trek and Spider-Man. Scotts unique talents and vision have been called upon by Disney, Universal Studios, Nickelodeon, and more. Even before graduating from the Academy of Art in San Francisco, Scott was hand picked to become one of a handful of elite artists founding Sega of America in the early 90s. Before his 25th birthday, Scott was designing arcade games for Atari during the day, and illustrating Star Trek comics by night. In 1995, Scott became one of the youngest artists ever to be inducted into the prestigious New York Society of Illustrators. Shortly after, he worked on his first feature film (Casper the Friendly Ghost). In 2000, Scotts animation was in such demand that he formed Blue Dream Studios, pioneering the concept of Virtual Studios where artists from all over the world would contribute through the internet. Star Wars, X-Files, Aliens vs. Predator, Spider-Man, and so many more franchises became a part of this emerging studio within the first few years. But even bigger things were developing for Scott. in the form of publishing. By 2002, Blue Dream Studios began publishing its own content. Hyperactive, Pet Robots, My Grandparents are Secret Agents, and almost a dozen other books became instant critical and financial successes world wide. In 2006, Disney purchased the rights to produce Pet Robots as a feature film. Since then, 4 other studios have done the same and several more are in development. That same year, Scott began putting one of his projects, The Dreamland Chronicles, online for the world to read. A single page of the story every day would appear on the website. Now, over 29 Million readers have come to the site and over 500,000 hits a day are generated. Scotts first movie, Animal Crackers, is now in full production and hes living the dream in his hometown of Franklin, TN. Christine was born in London, England and raised near Pinewood Studios in the village of Farnham Common. Her father was an Architect, Writer, Surveyor and Editor of the Estates Gazette. Her mother was the well-renowned Chief Make-up Artist Connie (Constance) Reeve who, Chiefed the original Moulin Rouge and Beat the Devil for John Huston and The Tales of Hoffmann for Micky Powell of the Powell/Pressberger Archers team. Her uncles Harold and Gerald Fletcher were also make-up artists. Harold trained Connie, who in the early 50s was the first woman to be trained at Shepperton Studios. Christines Aunt, (Connies elder sister) Eileen was also a make-up artist, but more notably Eileen was a painter who exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art. Christine was educated privately at Dair House, Farnham Royal, Brigitine Convent, Windsor and St. Helens and St. Katherines, Abingdon, after such refined private establishments, upon her parents divorce Christine went to a couple of very forgettable, rough state schools at which she endured some bullying for being well-spoken and POSH, so to fit in and to her mothers horror she quickly learned to affect an Oxfordshire twang and not wear black patent leather shoes Gleefully leaving after half-hearted A levels in an uninspiring environment, Christine went to a private secretarial college in Cheltenham where she also took Bel Canto singing lessons. Shorthand was a huge mystery for a whole term but to her surprise Christine was nominated at Graduation from the year-long course for a Student of the Year Award in recognition of her perseverance and final grades. After her first and only interview Christine joined Oxford University Press as a secretary in the Educational Books Department and after a short while this included working for the legendary, bemusing and off-beat Chief Editor Ron Heapy of the Childrens Books Department. The job was interesting enough, but at OUP unless you had a degree you were going nowhere. One day, the palms of her hands itched and switched on and she knew she had to leave an office world of key clacking and paper shuffling and go to work in film as a make-up artist or possibly Continuity Supervisor. Connie had taken Christine to many sets as a child and in 1963 Christine was cast as Baby Walker in the TV series Swallows and Amazons while Connie Chiefed the make-up - the role offered great childcare. Hardly surprising then that after visits to many sets including Cromwell, Space 1999, The Slipper and the Rose, The Bitch (which included a chat with the Continuity Supervisor Ceri Evans about a career in Continuity), a spell as an extra on Barry Lyndon and in 1981 a visit to the set of Clash of the Titans and Ray Harryhausens work shop, that Christine was drawn into the film industry, specifically and ultimately into make-up because it was the artistry of make-up that interested and excited her. Her first work was a daily make-up artist doing body make-up on the 1981 version of Clash of the Titans, and after other daily work was contracted as Make-up Assistant onto The Draughtsmans Contract to work with Lois Burwell (with whom she is still in touch). Christine then got a job on Return of the Jedi where the legendary Stuart and Graham Freeborn trained her in some of their skills and talents. She also did dailies on Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom on which she was also trained by Tom Smith (Gandhi) and other members of the team. When offered 2 jobs at the same time one on Greystoke with Rick Baker to build gorillas or to go onto Never Say Never Again she chose to go with the job that offered working with actors rather than creature building. On Never Say Never Again she looked after Klaus Maria Brandauer and did Kim Bassingers body make-up. She Chiefed her first film Party Party at the age of 22 for Terry Winsor. This film kick-started a lot of young talent. Later Christine worked as make-up assistant with Make-up Chiefs Peter Frampton and Paul Engelen two make-up legends from whom she learned a lot. In 1985 when 2 Chiefs had been fired off Full Metal Jacket, Christine got a call to go work on the picture for a couple of days as the remaining assistant Jenny Boost was struggling on her own. After 2 days Stanley asked if Christine would do a bullet hit test and upon seeing her test he asked her to stay which she did in a Co-Chief situation doing Matthew Modines make-up as well as other cast. Christine has often said that working with Kubrick, the level of concentration and discipline on the set was the most enjoyable experience of her career. When Christine went to say goodbye to Stanley at the end of the contract, he said You did a great job. Other features followed, and her first BAFTA nomination in 1989 but seeing that so many make-up artists (who were also trained in hair), were being let go from the BBC and other major TV studios, Christine realized she needed to learn hair in the long term. Perhaps this was a calculated backwards step, because Christine had excelled only in make-up previously, but it offered her the potential of being able to design the whole head. This in turn would enable the understanding and practical skills needed have a say in join-up in the areas that can often look separated, specifically sideburns in various periods and the balancing of wigs with complexions and brows. Christine was nominated for an RTS (Royal Television Society) Award for her work on The Fades. In the early 1990s she invented a very realistic way of doing wounds on black skin, which she ruefully observes a number of recent big pictures could have used - but still - her secret method is still not out and on screen Perhaps one day soon shell get the chance to put it on the big screen. She also helped find the last tranche of finance for an Independent Feature but sadly did not cut herself in contractually and as a result of trusting to the honorable nature of the Producer concerned lost her finders fee - lesson learned She subsequently studied at The National Film School attending the short course How to Produce a Low Budget Feature in order to better understand the Production process.
